Space Hunter Drake Redcrest (usually shortened to just Drake Redcrest) is a recurring toy character in the Chibi-Robo! series. He is an action figure of a character from a superhero anime series of the same name, which George Sanderson is a big fan of. He is usually seen patrolling around the Living Room.

Appearance

Drake's costume is reminiscent of various 1970's Japanese superhero outfits like Neo-Human Casshern or Gatchaman. He sports a helmet with a blue (yellow in the international version) visor and a yellow V on his chest. His face can barely be seen through his visor, and when visible it is shown that his "teeth" are always showing, a supposed heroic smile. He also has a blaster holstered on the left side of his belt, possibly indicating that he's left-handed. In later appearances like Captain Rainbow, his chin protrudes and is the only visible part of his head, while in Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder only part of his eyes are distinguishable. Drake's design was changed drastically in Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder; he instead sports a thinner belt with a new design on the buckle, his helmet completely covers his face, and he has a more organic design that makes him seem like a modern action figure.

Personality

Drake is completely loyal to justice, and makes efforts to stop anything that he perceives to be evil. He may not be the smartest hero, and is often forgetful and gets distracted from his self-imposed duties, though he's very kind and only wishes to help people. He has difficulty understanding some things, and is also said to be hiding some secret sadness deep in his heart.

In Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder, he asks Chibi-Robo for advice on justice, with a new question every day. He admits to only thinking about himself, and that he wants to be kinder. Continuing to talk with him reveals his new desire to improve himself as a person along with improving his sense of justice.

Story

He is one of the first toys met in Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure!, introducing himself with a monologue on top of the TV at night. Upon meeting Chibi-Robo, he gives him the Drake Redcrest Suit, telling him he should learn more about justice. Speaking to him again with the suit equipped prompts Drake to teach Chibi-Robo how to pose, and recruits him as a Space Hunter. Later, Drake hears Jenny Sanderson crying in the Foyer, and he moves his patrol upstairs, where he quickly gets distracted by seeing Princess Pitts stuck in her castle. Not knowing how to get up there, he heads back downstairs to practice a new attack, Great Twin Blizzard!

When the aliens visit, he assumes they are evil and tries to attack them. When he poses, however, it turns out he had run out of Gunpowder and his explosion won't work. Upset, he returns inside to work on his training once more. Giving him the gunpowder from the Basement solves this issue.

When Sunshine attacks Princess Pitts' castle, Drake flies in to stop him. He attempts to use his Force-Shield, but since Sunshine was already standing inside of it, the incoming punch is not blocked at all and he's sent flying to the ground.

At one point, he attempts to gift a flower to Princess Pitts. She asks him if he was the one who gave him the dead flowers near her castle, to which he comments on how hideous they are. She tells him she likes them, confusing him, so he leaves to continue his training in the Living Room.

Following the defeat of the Queen Spydor, Drake will stand on the chair in the Living Room, asking Chibi-Robo to watch the news with him to relax. The news informs him that Chibi-Robos are causing an energy crisis, leading him to believe that Chibi-Robo is on the path of evil! Having an internal crisis, he asks Chibi-Robo to leave him alone for a bit. If his part in the Mort and Princess Pitts story is complete, he will be found outside the following night, along with the aliens. He tells Chibi-Robo to perform his special attack Great Twin Blizzard with him, since it requires the cooperation of two Space Hunters. The team attack summons a meteor of ice onto the aliens, which actually ends up helping them, thus completing his story and earning his Sticker.

Captain Rainbow

Drake Redcrest appears as a character in Captain Rainbow, an action-adventure game by Skip Ltd., the same studio that made the Chibi-Robo! games. He arrives at the main setting of the game after a meteorite damages his ship, causing him to crash-land. His wish is to finally understand the difference between justice and evil, a common theme that he struggles with in the Chibi-Robo! series. After his introduction, he jumps off the ship and gets stuck in the sand, and the player must retrieve his spaceship's core so it can help save him. Once Drake is finally rescued, he attempts to take off in his ship and ultimately crashes again, leading to him injuring his head. His personality then changes to become more whimsical and playful, possibly due to his head injury. He then will request a game of hide & seek, and if you find all of his finding spot, he will give you the English version of his theme song, "Drake Redcrest Forever." He then finally settles at the ocean, posing philosophical questions about life and justice.

Space Hunter Code

Drake tells you different parts of the Space Hunter Code as the game progresses. The entirety of Drake Redcrest's Space Hunter Code goes as follows:

1- Greet everyone by yelling!

2- True justice cannot exist without a pose!

3- Never neglect your patrol!

4- Love justice with a burning passion!

5- Justice demands vigilance!

6- Acquire the ultimate technique!

7- Gunpowder costs 1(moolah) per use. Be frugal!

8- Justice never waivers!

9- Monitor the pulse of society!

10- Defeat all evil!

In Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder, Drake mentions a "Redcrest Justice Code," though he only tells you 3 out of 10 parts:

4- Passion is everything!

8- Justice cannot be defeated!

10- That which is forgotten must be remembered!

Trivia

• Chibi-Robo can patrol with Drake at any time by greeting him with a pose while Drake patrols.
• In Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure!, he seems to be able to control the TV remotely, as well as the projector in Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder.
• It's implied that Drake is left-handed. His blaster is holstered on the left side of the belt in his original appearance, and he has an album in Okaeri! Chibi-Robo! Happy Richie Ōsōji! titled「"Left-handed men for ever!"」
• In the Spanish version, Drake calls Chibi-Robo "Cadet Chibi-Robo-Man".
• Drake occasionally comments on how he feels like a "sinister force is watching him..." but quickly brushes it off. He is very likely referring to Sophie.
• Drake is bent on defeating the aliens whenever he sees them, which may mean he is unaware that they were responsible for bringing him and the other toys to life, as well as granting Giga-Robo eternal battery.
• While Drake is a toy based off the Drake Redcrest TV show, he may ironically be an alien as well. In the original game, Sunshine says there's a rumor that Drake is an alien, which is confirmed in Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder when Drake himself says he came to Earth from across the galaxy.
• Though Drake is a toy, he has demonstrated various super powers, including flight and a special move called Great Twin Blizzard!
• Shooting Drake with the Chibi-Blaster will make his helmet blink, revealing his bald head.
• In the Japanese version, Drake's helmet has a blue visor, while in the North American version, it is yellow. In Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder and Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, it is blue in all versions.
• He appears in a 2008 Japanese-only game titled Captain Rainbow, also a Skip game. Surprisingly, his visor's color in the trailers were yellow like in the North American version of Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure!, but this was eventually changed back to blue in the final version of the game. In this game, he also has a talking spaceship companion, who has a bit of an attitude.
• In Captain Rainbow, Drake mentions he was traumatized by a dog using him as a chew toy when he was younger. It may also be worth noting that in Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure! if Chibi-Robo wears the Tao suit and talks to Drake, he will react by saying "Are you trying to scare Drake Redcrest?"
• In his Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder appearance, his eyes can be partially seen from under his helmet.
• Also in Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder, Drake says he is an "exclusive, limited edition, Drake-con action figure" and also a promotional movie tie-in product. It's worth noting this version of Drake is likely different from the original one.
• Drake's design is based off of an anime hero called Gatchaman. Drake's Japanese name is 'Giccoman', similar to that of Gatchaman.
• In Chibi-Robo! Photo Finder, Drake is much bigger than Chibi-Robo, as if he was a real life action figure. In the next game, Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, he retains his design, but is almost as tall as Chibi-Robo. In Captain Rainbow, he is instead roughly 3 feet tall.
• Drake is the only toy to be shown talking directly to a human, though this is in Captain Rainbow, and is therefore not canon.
• In Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash, Drake says his belt is a utility belt.
• His original Japanese name, Space Detective Giccoman, is presumably a combination of the popular superheroes Gatchaman and Space Detective Gavan. The "Space Detective Gi" is from Gavan, and the "-choman" is from Gat"chaman". His visor is also very similar to Gatchaman's visor.
• Drake appears as a Spirit in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate with his spirit image being from Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash.
